QI. What is thyroid ultraosund scan?
This simple test uses sound waves to image the thyroid. The sound waves are emitted from a small hand-held transducer that is passed over the thyroid. Ultrasound is very safe even pregnant mother can use it to see the baby's condition. Thyroid ultrasound is very useful to know thyroid size, thyroid conition, thyroid nodule, blood flow and lymth condition.
Q2. How to read thyroid ultrasound report?
The normal thyroid gland is homogenous and is mildly hyper-echogenic compared to surrounding muscles. Each lobe of the thyroid has a globular shape with a smooth outline. So, we need to pay attention to:
1. The Thyroid Size
2. The homogenous of thyroid
3. Is there any area with lower eacho signal
4. The shape and outline of nodule
5. The calcification of nodule
Q3. What is the meaning of thyroid nodule?
Thyroid nodules are depicted as discrete lesions, as they cause distortion of the homogeneous echo pattern of the thyroid gland. The echo signals of the nodule or part of the nodule are less than the surrounding normal thyroid tissue. There are various characteristics on ultrasound that help to distinguish nodules.
Q4. What should I do if Doctor suspiciour maligant nodule?
Basically, Doctor will ask you for further investigated with FNA if Doctor suspect that you get maligant thyroid ndoule. The suspicious nodule may have disrupted eggshell calcification around the peripheries or lost its smooth round contour, and adopted a lobulated margin. A thyroid nodule is hypo-echogenic, with an irregular outline and possible disrupted calcification at the edges.
